Common nicknames for my dog, part two: Maddy

I recently had the distinct honor of being opening act for my Aunt M’s encyclopedic compendium of nicknames for Sasha, “The Sheply Wonder,” well known as The Weasel over at Open Salon. This lavishly illustrated guide to The Weasel’s pet names was apparently inspired by my simple homage to Gordon after his oral surgery last year (Poor Little Dude!) It’s given me the courage and motivation to dust off an abandoned draft of part two, which goes like this:

  • Miss Maddy
  • Maddy-girl
  • Little lioness
  • Mad-Eye Maddy
  • The Maddiator
  • Miss Fluffinstuff
  • Fluffernutter (by Scott)
  • Fluffy butt
  • The Fuzz
  • Spazzy
  • Bossy lady
  • Idiot (by Scott, when she’s acting, well, like an idiot)
  • You! (by me, when she’s done something idiotic)

Circus dog
Self-appointed sentry of the homestead, Maddy has been trained not to claw at the windowsill, but that’s not going to stand in the way of her surveillance.

You are cordially invited to follow Maddy and the whole Brat Pack in photos and videos on Flickr.

Gordon, by the way, underwent successful treatment for giardia shortly after I published that list and thankfully outgrew the nicknames inspired by his egregious olfactory abuse. I did neglect to include one of his common and perennial pet names: Bubba (and the delirious variant Bubbalicious).

Happy New Year from my family to yours!

I must say that fluffernutter is probably my favorite! I love watching her do the circus dog thing- and the way it came about is pretty entertaining too. I suppose I’ll have to come up with a list of Cookie’s nicknames now, eh?

  2. Yeah, Scott definitely wins with Fluffernutter. And yes, besides Cookie Monster, which is what I like to call her, do share how Cookie is known.

I have a personal preference for Bubba and was glad to see it added belatedly to the list. I suggest that the Madwoman of Chaillot be considered as I’ve thought of Maddy that way more than once. Granda and I endorse the Cookie Monster variant as she has not yet been forgiven for her false profiling of him as the Enemy and subsequently attacking him with vicious intent. The fact that Bing Crosby was also included in her Enemy Profile mollifies somewhat, but really, could anyone be more dog-lover-y than Grandpa?

I add to the discussion my own contributions: the Bonny Lady of Lothlorien, named for the golden mallorn trees of that land, and Molasses in January, aka Molly, named for her habit of well, slow as, she being the pup that just slept with her face in the food dish to avoid the effort of going and coming. I know that feeling, btw. Another discussion, so I desist. Those two proceeded to do many a Bonny and Clyde hold-up (think 6 loaves of bread, fresh baked) and escape. Did they have nicknames, girls, or does their fame reside in the original creative naming.

Which segways directing into the naming issues with little Mr. Tse Tse, whose father just referred to him in a Thank You (Tse Tse, a direct translation) email as Soc. Please. I replied in part that perhaps Prince Hamlet could consider what he might have named a son if he had lived. My final shot was that he might well haven chosen Laertes, so little Prince Larry is christened. A brief nod to the Brits and Chuck’s dual citizenship is a bonus. What say you, ladies of the Danish court?

  4. Hi, Mum. Don’t know how I forgot Bubba. I call him Bubba-roo a lot. *sheepish grin*

I can’t remember any nicknames for Bonnie and Molly. Their full names overshadow all else!

As for your obsession with Baby Socrates’s name, you’re going to have to let it go. Sure it’s bizarre, but so is its bestower dad. And it could be much, much, much worse. Like, Nietzsche. Or Bacon. Besides, that’s what nicknames are for, and I think Laertes, or Larry for short, is sweet revenge. Your Shakespearean drama reminds me in a way of the epic Shel Silverstein/Johnny Cash song, “A Boy Named Sue.” I do like to tell people that I’m named after my father.

Oh, sweetness. I’m SOooooo impressed you remember that Grandma Warrener story! And the corollary, the dreadful nightmare of Geraldine Georgette! Your comment makes me think of the Grammie Hyde twinkle when she says that she lived in the Phi Delt house at Depauw (is that the right fraternity?) then hastily adds that it was WWII and the boys were all out of town.

  6. Aunt Mary says:

I would like to add “Plume-tail” to Maddy’s list.

I love the Circus Dog video. The Maddy 500 video on snow is pretty entertaining also.

Maddy chewing the penguin is the stuff of nightmares!

Great blog, great Flickr photos, love the videos!!!

Hugs, pats, and kisses all around.
