Film of the week

Speaking of fantastic French movies, Bob and I really enjoyed Les Triplettes de Belleville earlier this week, feeling that it lived up to the hype. It’s a French-Canadian animated feature that tells a funny, moving story without bothering too much with words, but instead relying on crazy, detailed imagery and great music (get a taste by watching the trailer). This is no shiny and cute Finding Nemo – it’s chunky and unpredictable and dark. I love the world of Bruno the dog, the prevalence of bicycling and other people- (and, er, canine-) powered transportation by the underdog protagonists, and I love the fact that a bunch of frumpy old ladies save the day. Take that Disney…

Also speaking of fantastic French movies, have you seen L’auberge espagnole? Awesome movie.

I second Katie about "Triplets of Belleville." This is really different and great! The dog dreams were the best! Let’s hope the Academy recognizes it tomorrow when they announce the award nominees.

wait a minute….i’ve never heard of L’auberge espagnole..is my evil twin out there writing replies or what?? grrrr i can’t get this stupid thing to stop writing in italics. sometimes i think computers act up just to frustrate us and then laugh at us. anyways, i personally like the shininess and cuteness of Finding Nemo and will leave a movie described as "chunky" to my weird-film-tastes sister and bro-in-law

Sister Emily, it’s not that I didn’t like Finding Nemo, which was, well, shiny and cute, but it didn’t speak to me like The Triplets did. You’ve got to give it a chance, if only for Bruno the dog! Trust me on this one…
